Do you connect to Tabular Models via Excel?

I’m curious if other customers have shown any of their users how to connect to a Tabular Model via Excel.  If so, do you ever need to know who is accessing the TM in this manner?

We currently do this and in order to understand who may need additional communication when there is an outage, or something has changed I feel there should be some way of capturing who has access the TM.

Before I do an enhancement request I thought I would see if others have had a similar need.

Thanks,

Pam

Hi Pamela,

I haven’t found any table in the database that tracks user token usage, which would be the most accurate way to see who is actively using the feature. However, there is a role feature that grants access to Cubes & Tabular Models, so I’d suggest using it to identify potential users of this functionality.

Bests,

Hi @mserafinowski - yes, totally agree that is a nice feature to limit who can use it but just because they have the ability doesn’t mean they use it.  Our desire is to know who truly uses it in case we want to change it we know the direct impact.  Some users have that turned on in their license and they have no clue about it. LOL.

Thanks

Pam

Hi @pamela.sargent - so far, I haven’t seen any mechanism to track this beyond the previously mentioned user role feature. It’s not perfect since it only helps identify who could use it but it does narrow down the pool of potential users quite a bit. It’s a shame that the database doesn’t have a table to at least store encrypted information about tokens and their usage. There might be one, but it’s likely not accessible to clients and there’s no trace of it in the publicly available database schema.

@mserafinowski - totally agree.  Planview did confirm this is not a capability at this time.  Before I submitted the enhancement request I wanted to start a dialog to see if others see this as a benefit as well.  Thank you so much for your feedback & conversation.
